Professional sod installation in Utah & Arizona is one of the fastest ways to establish a healthy, green yard. Whether you’re constructing a new lawn or revamping dead, dried out grass, sod is an instant solution that protects your soil from drying out, washing away, or blowing off.

Sod is pre-grown turfgrass harvested in sections with its root system intact, allowing it to be laid directly onto prepared soil for rapid establishment. When properly installed and maintained, sod quickly integrates with native soil and begins active growth within weeks.

Common Questions About Sod Installation Answered By Hot Shot Professionals

Is it Hard to Install Sod in Utah & Arizona?

An image of wheelbarrows full of sod - Hot Shot offers professional sod installation in Utah & Arizona so you don't have to DIY.

Sod installation is a labor-intensive process that requires proper planning, tools, and timing. Sod is delivered in large, heavy pallets that must be laid quickly and correctly to avoid drying out or root failure. 1

Proper soil preparation, grading for drainage, and tight seams between sod strips are all important steps that affect turf performance. In hot climates, sod should be installed during cooler parts of the day, immediately watered, and monitored for signs of heat stress or dehydration.

Working with professionals like Hot Shot will help you avoid common issues like uneven rooting, gaps, or wasted materials. Sod requires a strict watering schedule, careful maintenance, and foot traffic management until roots establish. We’ll provide guidance for all post-installation care, so you can be sure your new sod roots successfully and thrives.

How Much is Sod Installation?

Most sod is sold by the pallet or by the square foot. On average, the cost of professional sod installation is typically between $1 to $2 per square foot. 2

The final cost depends on many factors unique to your project like: 3

  • Yardsize
  • Your location
  • Current soil conditions
  • Any prep work needed
  • Topography & Accessibility
  • The type and quality of sod

While sod may cost more upfront than seeding, it eliminates the long waiting period for germination and reduces the risk of weed invasion or soil loss. It gives you a mature, stabilized lawn from day one.

When you choose Hot Shot Sprinkler Repair & Landscape, you’re choosing professionals who understand the local climate, provide high-quality sod, and offer aftercare support.

Is it Cheaper to Lay Sod or Artificial Turf?

Hot Shot Sprinkler Repair & Landscape also provides turf installation in Utah & Arizona.

Artificial turf has become a popular alternative to natural grass because of its low maintenance and year-round appearance. Unlike sod, artificial grass doesn’t need mowing, watering, or fertilizing. For those looking to reduce upkeep and yard work, turf can be very appealing.

However, artificial turf comes with a significantly higher upfront cost when compared to sod. Costs vary, but usually fall into a range of $8 to $18 per square foot. 4

Turf can last up to 10–15 years with proper care, but over time it will fade, flatten, or overheat, especially in hot climates. Artificial surfaces can become uncomfortably hot under direct sun, and unlike living grass, they don’t regulate temperature or support soil health.

For homeowners seeking a low-maintenance and environmentally conscious solution, xeriscaping may be a better fit. Xeriscaping uses native and drought-tolerant plants to reduce water use while maintaining an aesthetic appeal for your lawn.

How Do You Prepare for Sod?

Sod installation in Utah & Arizona covers a lot more than just rolling out sod. Preparing the soil and area will help your new grass thrive—we’ll instruct you on what to do before we come to install your sod. Our team takes care of all the heavy lifting and major preparation.

Yard Preparation Steps

  1. Clear the site: We remove any existing grass, weeds, rocks, stumps, and debris so the soil is exposed and ready for sod‑to‑soil contact.
  2. Till the soil: The top 2-4 inches of soil is loosened to improve air and water movement and reduce compaction.
  3. Grade the area: The soil surface is adjusted so it slopes away from buildings and avoids low spots that collect water.
  4. Settle the surface: Hot Shot Sprinkler Repair & Landscape technicians will roll and tamp the soil to firm the surface, eliminate large air pockets, and fill any depressions.
  5. Check drainage and moisture: Water should never pool. We check that the soil is moist, not oversaturated, before sod is installed.
  6. Arrange timing and delivery: We will make sure your sod is delivered when you’re home and ready for our team to install. Fresh sod needs to be laid quickly to avoid drying out.

How Do I Properly Care For and Maintain New Sod?

Immediately after installation, the sod should be watered thoroughly so the roots make contact with the soil and begin to settle in. In hotter climates like Utah & Arizona, water can evaporate quickly, so monitoring moisture levels is vital. Over the next 10 to 14 days, the lawn should be kept consistently moist to prevent the sod from drying out or lifting.

Do not overwater—keep the grass wet, but not soggy. Saturated conditions can lead to root rot or fungal issues. Avoid walking on the fresh sod for two weeks, as foot traffic can disrupt the rooting process.

After the initial two-week period, watering frequency should decrease as the sod begins to root deeper. Knowing when to scale back can be determined with a “tug test,” if the sod resists gentle lifting at the edges and has visible growth, it’s likely taking hold and doesn't need as much water as before. 5 Transition to fewer, deeper waterings to encourage strong root growth and lawn resilience.

They found the problem with the sprinkler valve and fixed it that day as well as checking the entire system while they were there.
  • Bob Kaufman
Hot Shot Sprinkler's employees arrived on time, completed a messy project as promised, and stuck to their price even when it (seemed to?) take considerably longer than they'd anticipated. They walked me through the work they'd done and cleaned up a large, deep hole they needed to dig, leaving barely a trace of the hole.
  • Dan Lee
Daniel and D’Angelo did a great job of fixing my sprinkler system. I even had a problem with a foreign object that had fallen down into my stop and waste valve and Daniel used a really innovative approach to get it out when a vacuum wouldn’t work. They really made sure to take care of my sprinkler system.

    Great service all the time
  • Sarah Farnsworth
We've been in our new house and this is our first spring/summer with this sprinkler system. We had a broken back flow preventer, and purchased a new one but were hesitant to install it. We called yesterday and they came this morning. Two techs came out, Alexis and Eric, who have been amazing! They did the work quickly and when we asked were able to check the sprinkler system (which had not been part of the inital request for service). All in all it was about 2 hours worth of work and parts for the new nozzels and repairing some drip irrigations leaks. I am so impressed with their professionalism and efficiency. Thank you both!

Adrian and Alfredo were professional, friendly and fast. Explained what they were fixing and why.

Update (5/20/26): I’ve used Hot Shots twice a year since 2023, and the employees who come to my home have always been professional, courteous, and reliable. The actual service work has consistently been good. This year, however, I was unexpectedly charged 40 days after the service was completed. When I called, I was told their accounting system had recently been updated and they were “cleaning things up.” While I understand system changes happen, charging customers more than a month later without warning isn’t a great experience — especially after receiving a $0 due invoice on the day of service, which indicated the balance had already been paid. To be clear, I did owe the balance and had no issue paying it. My concern was that the charge should have been processed on the day of service or clearly communicated in advance. The company has since reached out and apologized for the experience, which I genuinely appreciated. The service itself has always been solid, and I’m hopeful this was simply a one-time billing issue.

Francisco and Josh came to assess some dead zones in my sprinkler system. They were able to do a comprehensive assessment with a fix which was easily explained to me. Very friendly and professional experience. Sprinklers have been running great since.

This is the 2nd time Hot Shot has done pipe and valve repair for me. Francisco is delightful to work with and I trust him to know just what to do for me. Nothing is cheap anymore, but he again wasted no time fixing what was broken.
  • Chick Little
The whole experience was really good. They were able to come in 2 days. They were here for just over 2 hours. I was a little surprised by the total cost, but my philosophy is sometimes you have to pay a little bit more for a quality product. (And it is usually worth it.)
